Kacy Catanzaro Named as ECAC Gymnast of the Week

CENTREVILLE, Mass. ? Freshman Kacy Catanzaro of Towson University, who led the Tigers to a first place finish at their own Shelli Calloway Memorial Towson Invitational Meet on Friday evening,  has been named as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Rookie Gymnast of the Week, it has been announced by ECAC officials.

Catanzaro is the third different Towson freshman to be honored as the ECAC Rookie of the Week this season. In January, Avis Hixon was named as the ECAC Rookie of the Week after leading the Tigers to a season-opening win at Brown.

On February 18, Lindsay Poplaski was named as the ECAC Rookie of the Week after posting a career 38.30 all-around score in a win over Cornell University.

While leading the Tigers to a seasonal high 193.650 team score at the Calloway Memorial Invitational, Catanzaro enjoyed the best meet of her young career. On vault, she tied for third place behind two of her teammates, junior Alise McDonald and Hixon. Catanzaro earned a career high 9.775 score on vault.

On the uneven bars, Catanzaro matched her career high with a 9.775 score. She finished second on bars behind another  teammate, Jackie Schweitzer. Schweitzer finished first on bars with a 9.80 score.

Catanzaro tied for first place on the balance beam with a career best 9.80 score. She tied for first with Melanie Standridge of Cornell.

Now 12-4 on the season, the Tigers are ranked eighth in the NCAA Southeast region with a 191.655 Regional Qualifying Score.

Coach Dick Filbert and his very young Tigers return to action on Wednesday, March 4 at William & Mary.
