Tigers Defeat George Washington, 13-7

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Senior attacker Meggie McNamara scored two goals and added three assists to lead the Tigers (4-1) to their second win in a row, a 13-7 non-conference victory over George Washington University (1-7) at the Colonials' Mount Vernon Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Led by McNamara, the Tigers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the opening 14 minutes of the first half. The reigning CAA Player of the Week, McNamara scored two goals along with an assist during the opening run.

The Colonials used back-to-back goals from Lauren Mobyed and Taylor Donohue to narrow the margin to 5-2 with 10:36 remaining in the first half. However, the Tigers responded by scoring five straight goals over the last ten minutes to take a commanding 10-2 advantage at the intermission.

After a slow start to the second half, the Tigers extended their lead to 11-2 when senior defender Julie Ondrako scored her second goal of the game, an unassisted marker past goalkeeper Liz Hoffman.

But, George Washington answered with a four-goal run of its own to snap a nearly 25-minute scoring drought and close within 11-6 with 8:19 remaining in the second half. Audrey Joy scored two goals during the spurt while Sarah Phillips added a goal with an assist.

With 6:58 remaining, junior midfielder Nikki Marcinik scored off a feed from junior Steph Taylor to give Towson a 12-6 lead.

The Colonials cut the margin to 12-7 with 25 seconds remaining on a goal from Katherine Sampson before freshman Sarah Appelt scored off a McNamara feed with nine seconds left for the first goal of her college career.

While McNamara led the Tigers with her five-point performance, Marcinik and Ondrako each added a pair of goals in the victory. For Ondrako, it marked the second two-goal game of her career.

Freshman goalkeeper Mary Teeters made seven saves for the Tigers, who outshot George Washington by a 36-18 margin.

Donohue and Joy each led the Colonials with two goals while Hoffman had 15 saves.

The Tigers will return to Johnny Unitas® Stadium on Tuesday afternoon to open a six-game homestand against sixth-ranked Syracuse University at 4 p.m.
