Woodfield Leads Tigers Over Richmond, 17-9

TOWSON, Md. ? Senior midfielder Britt Woodfield scored a season-high four goals and added two assists as the Tigers (5-2) earned their third win in the last four games, a 17-9 non-conference victory over the University of Richmond (0-8) at Johnny Unitas® Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Woodfield was one of three Tigers to record a “hat trick” in the victory as Towson scored a season-high 17 goals in the victory.

“They did a great job in the second half of digging in and finishing their shots after Richmond scored two quick goals,” Towson Coach Missy Doherty said. “It was an issue in the first half of finishing our shots, but we came out and were able to do that in the second half.

“The team is really starting to come together as a unit and there are a lot of players scoring for us,” added Doherty. “Offensively, we are playing well as a team.”

After the teams exchanged goals in the opening four minutes, the Tigers scored four straight goals to take a 5-1 lead with 10:49 remaining in the first half. Junior midfielder Steph Taylor scored a goal with an assist during the spurt.

After a goal by sophomore midfielder Anne Ryan narrowed the Spiders' deficit to 5-2, Taylor and junior midfielder Lauren McAfee tallied back-to-back goals, upping the Tigers' lead to 7-2.

Senior attacker Mandy Friend and freshman Caitlin Fifield tallied a pair of goals just 52 seconds apart before junior midfielder Nikki Marcinik ended the first half with a goal off a feed from sophomore MaryEllen Elie, giving Towson an 8-4 advantage at the intermission.

Friend and sophomore attacker Danielle Schaevitz opened the second half with consecutive goals in a 31-second span to cut the Spiders' deficit to 8-6. However, the Tigers responded by scoring nine straight goals over an 11-minute span to take a commanding 17-6 lead with 17:51 remaining in the second half. Woodfield scored three goals during the spurt while senior attacker Meggie McNamara added a goal with two assists.

With 15:40 remaining, Friend started a three-goal run by the Spiders with her 25th goal of the season, a free position marker past freshman goalkeeper Mary Teeters. But, the Spiders were unable to get any closer as Towson defeated Richmond for the third straight time.

Woodfield led the Tigers with a season-high six points while Taylor and Marcinik added three goals in the victory. Teeters made 11 saves in the victory for Towson, which outshot Richmond by a 39-31 margin.

“Mary's doing a great job and made some really good saves for us when Richmond was trying to make their comeback,” said Doherty. “She's been pretty solid for us.”

Friend led Richmond with three goals while senior attacker Alli Furstenburg added a goal with two assists.

It was the Spiders' eighth straight loss.
