Tigers' Late Rally Shocks Drexel, 7-4

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. ? Senior attackman Bill McCutcheon scored two goals and added an assist as the Tigers (4-4, 2-0) overcame a 4-2 deficit with five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter en route to their third straight win, a 7-4 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Drexel University (4-5, 0-1) at the Dragons' Vidas Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers also presented Coach Tony Seaman with the 250th victory of his college career. In his 28th season as a college coach, Seaman now has a 250-142 career record and became the 16th coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the milestone.

“It didn't feel any different than the 249th win,” said Seaman, who is one of eight active coaches with 250 wins. “As long as the wins pile up and the losses don't, I will be a happy man.”

The Tigers trailed the Dragons by 4-1 with 11:17 remaining in the third quarter when junior midfielder Adam Dennis scored an unassisted goal. After that point, the Tiger defense stepped up and shut Drexel out for the remaining 26 minutes of the game.

With 7:39 left in the fourth quarter, sophomore midfielder Scott Ruhl cut the Tiger deficit to 4-3 when he scored off a pass from McCutcheon.

Less than a minute later, the Tigers received a huge break when junior defenseman Matt McCormick was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

The non-releasable penalty enabled Towson to score the game-tying and go-ahead goals in a 31-second span. With 6:30 left, McCutcheon scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 4-4.  With 5:59 remaining, junior midfielder Pat Britton scored his fourth goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Randall Cooper, putting the Tigers ahead for good.

With 1:09 remaining, sophomore attackman Tim Stratton scored into an open goal off a feed from senior Justin Schneider (St. Mary's H.S./Stevensville, Md.), upping the Tigers' advantage to 6-4. Just 15 seconds later, senior midfielder Kyle Smedley added an insurance goal into an open net to put the game out of reach. It was Smedley's first goal of the season.

The teams traded goals in the opening seven minutes of the first quarter before Drexel used a three-goal run to take a 4-1 lead in the second quarter. Junior attackman Colin Ambler gave the Dragons a 2-1 lead with 15 seconds left in the first quarter before senior midfielder Joe Wojciechowski upped the Drexel advantage to 3-1 midway through the second period with an unassisted marker past junior goalkeeper Rob Wheeler.

While McCutcheon led the offense with a three-point performance, Wheeler led the Tiger defense with another outstanding effort, making 10 saves. In the last two games, he has made 24 saves while allowing just 11 goals.

“I am feeling more comfortable right now than I ever have and the communication between me and the defense has been great of late,” Wheeler said. “I try to keep a cool head and do my part to help this team win. I think these last few games have been huge for me.

“I can't even tell you how special it is to be part of this team and to be part of Coach Seaman's 250th win,” Wheeler added. “This was an absolutely phenomenal win for us today.”

Ambler led Drexel in the loss with one goal and one assist while freshman goalkeeper Mark Manos 11 saves for the Dragons, who outshot Towson by a 32-31 margin.

“This was a great victory for our team today,” Seaman said. “Our defense played a great game. It seemed like they were on the field a lot but they kept after them and put us in a position to win.

“I am so proud of this team,” Seaman added. “This was a game we won piece-by-piece and goal-by-goal. Our guys deserve a lot of credit for winning this one.”

With the victory, the Tigers avenged a 10-9 loss to the Dragons last season. Towson has now beaten Drexel 35 times in 39 games.

The Tigers will wrap up their three-game road trip on Tuesday evening when they make the short trip to UMBC for a 7:30 p.m. match-up against the Retrievers. The game will be broadcast in the Baltimore area on WTMD-FM 89.7 with Spiro Morekas and Greg LaCour handling the call.
