Tigers Defeat George Mason for 3rd Straight Win

FAIRFAX, Va. - Senior attacker Meggie McNamara scored a season-high four goals and added three assists as the Tigers (9-5, 3-2) broke open a 5-5 half-time tie by holding George Mason (5-9, 1-4) to one goal after the intermission en route to a 13-6 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Patriots at George Mason Stadium on Friday evening.

Led by McNamara, the Tigers outscored the Patriots by an 8-1 margin in the second half and limited George Mason to just seven shots.

After sophomore Caroline Hoyt gave George Mason a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the first half, junior attacker Jacie Kendall scored back-to-back goals to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage with 21:11 remaining in the opening stanza.

But, the Patriots responded by scoring four of the next five goals, including two goals from Hoyt, to regain a 5-3 lead with 4:33 remaining in the first half. With 3:58 remaining in the half, senior midfielder Britt Woodfield scored off a McNamara feed to narrow the deficit to 5-4 before Kendall added her third goal of the half, converting a Woodfield pass with 26 seconds remaining to tie the score at 5-5.

Just over a minute into the second half, McNamara gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead when she scored her 23rd goal of the season off a pass from junior midfielder Nikki Marcinik. The Tigers upped the lead to 7-5 with 22:37 left when junior Steph Taylor scored off a McNamara pass for her ninth goal of the season.

After senior Brittany Berger scored on a free-position shot with 21:28 left, the Tigers went on a 6-0 run to seal the victory. McNamara scored three of her four goals during the run as Towson held George Mason to just four shots in the final 21 minutes.

While McNamara led the Tigers with a career-high seven points, Kendall posted three goals for her second "hat trick" of the season. The reigning CAA Co-Player of the Week, Marcinik contributed a goal with three assists. Freshman goalkeeper Mary Teeters made seven saves for the Tigers, who outshot George Mason by a 38-18 margin.

The Patriots were led by Hoyt, who scored three goals in a losing effort.

The Tigers will continue their three-game road trip on Sunday afternoon when they travel to James Madison for a 1 p.m. game against the Dukes. Meanwhile, the Patriots will host Delaware at 1 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
