HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior forward Phyllicia Rosselli scored the game-winning goal with just 54 seconds remaining in the first overtime period as the Tigers (2-1-0) won their second straight game, a 2-1 non-conference victory over Xavier University (0-3-0) at the James Madison/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational at the JMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Rosselli, who tallied her third goal of the weekend, scored on a three-yard shot in front of the goal after receiving a pass from freshman Cheyenne Skidmore on the right side of the endline.
“This was a tough game for us after Friday night when we used a lot of energy,” Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. “We didn't come out with a lot of energy early, but we were able to rebound and hold on for the victory.”
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when Skidmore scored the first goal of her college career on a six-yard shot after a pass from senior forward Erica Marshall.
Just over eight minutes later, the Musketeers tied the game at 1-1 when senior Brittany Green scored off a pass from junior Carly Wenzel.
The Musketeers had a pair of potential scoring chances in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Wenzel took a shot, which was stopped by sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak. Green had a chance in the 87th minute, which was also saved by Papciak.
The Tigers had three chances in the final minute of regulation to earn the victory. With 52 seconds remaining, senior midfielder Brittany Hadaway took a shot that hit the crossbar. Marshall followed with a chance just nine seconds later, but her attempt was stopped by senior defender Loren Marshall.
Junior defender Samantha Young had the Tigers' final chance in regulation, but her shot with seven seconds left went wide, sending the game into the extra period.
Skidmore scored a goal with an assist to lead the Tigers to the victory after posting an assist in the Tigers' 4-1 victory over Bucknell on Friday night.
After the victory, Coach Paynter was complimentary of the freshman by saying, “Cheyenne did a great job of instilling energy in the front line for us today.”
Papciak made three saves in the victory as the Tigers limited the Xavier offense to just eight shots, including two in the first half.
Senior goalkeeper Kelly Farrell made five saves in a losing effort for the Musketeers.
The Tigers had four players named to the All-Tournament Team. In addition to Young, Marshall and Rosselli, freshman defender Alex Davis also earned All-Tournament Team honors after starting both games.
The Tigers will finish their four-game road trip on Friday night when they travel to Rutgers for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game against the Scarlet Knights. Meanwhile, the Musketeers will host Pittsburgh next Sunday afternoon.
