William & Mary Defeats Tigers in CAA Opener, 4-1

TOWSON, Md. – After dropping a pair of one-goal losses on the road last week, the Tigers had hoped that playing at home could help them be successful in their Colonial Athletic Association opener against William & Mary on Saturday. However, the Tribe had other plans and used a solid offense to hand the Tigers a 4-1 CAA loss at the Towson Center Soccer Complex.

Senior forward Andrew Hoxie scored a goal and added two assists as the Tribe won their third straight game. The Tribe, who have outscored their opponents by a 13-1 margin during the three-game win streak, also snapped a six-game winless streak against the Tigers with the victory.

“William & Mary is a good team and they were sharper, especially at the beginning of the game,” Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said. “They took control of the game in the first half.”

The Tribe took a quick 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the first half when junior forward Alan Koger scored his third goal of the season on a crossing pass from Hoxie.

With 3:31 remaining in the half, the Tribe upped the advantage to 2-0 when junior forward Ryan Snyder converted a header after a corner kick by freshman midfielder Chris Perez.

Hoxie extended the William & Mary cushion to 3-0 with 5:20 remaining in regulation when he scored his fourth goal of the season off an assist from junior Nathaniel Baako.

With 3:24 left, the Tigers narrowed the margin to 3-1 when sophomore forward Liam Maloney took passes from junior midfielder Marco Mangione and sophomore goalkeeper John Steele and scored on a breakaway. It was Maloney's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

However, the Tribe quickly responded when senior midfielder Price Thomas scored just 43 seconds later, giving the Tribe a 4-1 lead. Hoxie and senior midfielder Jeremy Harris were credited with the assists.

Junior goalkeeper Andrew McAdams made six saves for William & Mary, which outshot Towson by a 17-14 margin.

Steele made five saves in a losing effort for the Tigers, who dropped their third straight game after a 3-1 start to the season.

The Tigers will travel to Drexel University next Saturday for a 6 p.m. game against the Dragons. Meanwhile, the Tribe will begin a three-game homestand on Wednesday when they host Loyola (Md.) at 7 p.m.
