Liam Maloney Leads Tigers Past Fairfield, 2-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Led by the first career multi-goal game from sophomore forward Liam Maloney, the Tigers (1-1-0) earned their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Fairfield (0-2-0) at the Stags' Lessing Field on Sunday afternoon.

Maloney, who leads the Tigers with five points, scored a goal in each half as the Tigers built a 2-0 lead and held off the Stags for the victory.

“I think we came out with the right mentality and we attacked from the beginning today,” Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said. “Fairfield is a good team and a tough team to play against. We had to find a way to get it done today.

“The defense had to make some big plays late in the game,” Coach Olszewski added. “Both teams were looking to get their first win of the season and it showed, especially at the end of the game.”

Maloney gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when he collected a loose ball in the penalty area and scored on a shot into the upper right corner of the goal.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Maloney upped the Tiger advantage to 2-0 when he scored after receiving passes from juniors Chris Zecha and Marco Mangione.

With 28:15 remaining in regulation, the Stags narrowed the deficit to 2-1 when junior midfielder Matt Ernst scored the first goal of his college career off assists from senior midfielder Christian Uy and junior defender Jon Kaufman.

From there, the Tiger defense limited Fairfield to just three shots in the final 28 minutes to secure the victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper John Steele made two saves for the Tigers, who were outshot by a slim 12-11 margin.

Freshman goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe made four saves for the Stags, who dropped their second straight one-goal setback.

The Tigers will travel to Lehigh University on Thursday evening for a 7 p.m. match against the Mountain Hawks. Meanwhile, Fairfield will travel to Albany next Sunday to face the Great Danes at 4 p.m.
