TOWSON, Md. - A balanced scoring effort helped lead the Tigers (9-8, 3-3 CAA) to a 62-52 win over UNC Wilmington on Thursday morning as part of the Education Day. Towson placed three players in double figures in the contest led by Shanae Baker-Brice's 19 points.
"I thought one of the things we really did well today was to share the basketball," said Coach Joe Mathews. "I thought Shanae did another extraordinary job and Haliena Snowden has really stepped up and is playing some of her best basketball right now. That combined with a strong rebounding effort and tough defense was the key to our success."
The Tigers and Seahawks battled back and forth early on as the score was tied at 13-13 with 14:11 to play in the first half. The Tigers responded with a 7-2 run to take a 20-15 lead with 11:10 to play in the half. Baker-Brice played a big factor in the game early on as she either scored or assisted on each of the Tigers' first nine baskets. UNC Wilmington responded with an 8-0 run of its own to take a 23-20 lead with 8:04 to play. The Tigers would score 15 of the final 19 points in the half to take a 35-27 lead at the break.
Towson would outscore the Seahawks 14-6 over the first 10 minutes of the second half to increase its lead to 49-33. A Treasure Johnson three-pointer at 7:04 made it a 51-38 game. Two straight buckets by Snowden and a lay-up by Kandace Davis gave the Tigers a 57-38 lead with 3:50 to play. It was Towson's largest lead of the game at that point. Following a Seahawk basket, Baker-Brice would connect on a pair of free throws at 3:14 to give the Tigers a 19 point advantage. UNC Wilmington would outscore the Tigers 12-3 over the final three minutes to make it a 62-52 final.
Baker-Brice added six rebounds, seven assists and two steals to go along with her 19 points. Snowden recorded her fourth "double-double" of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She has now scored in double figures in five of the last six games. Davis was the third Tiger in double figures as she connected for 11 with seven rebounds.
Greta Luksyte led the Seahawks with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. Johnson came off the bench to score 11 points while Brittany Blackwell had seven points, five rebounds and five steals.
