WILMINGTON, N.C. – After spotting the Tigers (8-4-2, 2-4-2) a two-goal lead in the first half, UNC Wilmington (7-4-4, 3-1-4) used a pair of second half goals to earn its fourth consecutive draw, a 2-2 Colonial Athletic Association tie against Towson at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.
Despite the tie, the Seahawks are winless in their last five games. Meanwhile, the Tigers have a two-game unbeaten streak after losing three straight games.
Senior midfielder Joe O'Rourke gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when he took a feed from freshman forward Olakunle Banjo and scored his fourth goal of the season.
With 10:16 left in the first half, the Tigers upped the lead to 2-0 lead when Banjo sent a low pass to senior midfielder Marco Mangione. Mangione fired a shot into the far right side of the goal to score his CAA-leading 10th goal of the season.
But, the Seahawks responded in the second half with a pair of goals. Just under six minutes into the second half, senior forward Nassim Berhouni scored his third goal of the season on a penalty kick.
Berhouni's goal snapped the Seahawks' streak of 499 minutes, 51 seconds without a goal, dating back to October 6 against James Madison.
With 13:04 remaining in regulation, freshman midfielder Andy McDaniel tied the game at 2-2 with the first goal of his college career after getting a crossing pass from sophomore forward Thomas Driver.
The Seahawks, who outshot Towson by a 6-1 margin in the two overtime periods, had the best opportunity to win the game in the second overtime period when sophomore midfielder Etienne Boulanger fired a 13-yard shot that got past junior goalkeeper John Steele, but senior defender Roslin Nzokou made a game-saving stop by heading the ball off the goal line.
Steele made one save in the tie for Towson, which was outshot by a commanding 21-6 margin. Meanwhile, senior goalkeeper Brock Duckworth posted one save for the Seahawks.
The Tigers will wrap up their quick two-game road trip on Wednesday night when they visit Delaware at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the Seahawks will begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday night at William & Mary.
