TOWSON, Md. – Junior goalkeeper Josh Pantazelos made four saves to earn his third shutout of the season as Virginia Commonwealth University (7-3-6, 4-1-4) earned its second win in the last three games, a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Tigers (8-6-2, 2-6-2) on Senior Day at the Towson Center Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The win allowed the Rams to move into second place in the CAA standings. The top four teams will qualify for the CAA Tournament, which will take place on November 12 and 14 at William & Mary. Meanwhile, the Tigers were eliminated from postseason consideration.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when senior forward CJ Gehin-Scott took a pass from sophomore midfielder Alberto Fonseca and scored his seventh goal of the season from 20 yards out.
The Tigers, who lost by a 1-0 margin for the second straight game, had a couple of chances late in the second period to tie the game. Senior midfielder Joe O'Rourke had an attempt to tie the game in the 83rd minute stopped by Pantazelos.
With 2:12 remaining in regulation, senior midfielder Marco Mangione had a shot to tie the game, but Pantazelos made his third save of the second half to protect the one-goal advantage.
O'Rourke had one final chance for the Tigers with 3.5 seconds remaining after the Rams were called for a foul. However, his shot from 30 yards out sailed wide to give VCU its second straight win over the Tigers.
Freshman goalkeeper Angelo Viteritti made three saves in a losing effort for the Tigers, who outshot the Rams by a 15-10 margin.
The Tigers will finish the season on Friday afternoon when they travel to Georgia State for a 3 p.m. game against the Panthers.
