HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Senior midfielder Marco Mangione scored two goals to lead the Tigers (7-1-1, 1-1-1) to their first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season, a 2-0 victory over Hofstra University (3-5-2, 1-2-0) at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Mangione, who leads the Tigers with seven goals and six assists, recorded his second multi-goal game of the season. He also had both goals in the Tigers' 2-1 victory over Lehigh on September 12.
Mangione gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when he took passes from junior forward Liam Maloney and freshman forward Olakunle Banjo and scored past junior goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone.
Then, Mangione added an insurance goal with 49 seconds remaining when he scored an unassisted goal off a turnover by Cumpstone. He jumped in front of a clearing pass from Cumpstone and the ball hit him in the back and went in the goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Angelo Viteritti earned the first shutout of his college career by making three saves for the Tigers, who outshot Hofstra by a 16-10 margin. Cumpstone made five saves in a losing effort for the Pride, who were shut out for the sixth time this season.
The Tigers will return home for a quick two-game homestand, which begins on Sunday afternoon against Drexel University at 1 p.m.
