TOWSON, Md. - Shante Evans recorded her third "double-double" in the last five games to help lead Hofstra to a 47-41 win over the Tigers on Thursday evening in Colonial Athletic Association play. Towson (13-14, 7-9 CAA) got nine points apiece from Haliena Snowden and Charmonique Watt in the game.
"We couldn't keep the consistency throughout the game that we needed," said Coach Joe Mathews. "It's been a struggle all season."
Towson found itself in an early hole as Hofstra opened the game on an 11-4 run. Evans had eight of the Pride's first 11 points in the contest. The Tigers hit back-to-back buckets with the second coming at 11:42 to pull the home team to within three at 11-8. Evans hit a jumper at 9:31 to jumpstart a 6-0 run by the visitors. A jumper by Jaleesa Dryver at 6:12 broke up the Hofstra run and made it a 17-10 game. The two teams battled back and forth on both ends of the court and Hofstra led 21-14 with 3:05 to play. The Tigers would close the half on a 9-0 run to turn a seven-point deficit into a two-point advantage at 23-21.
The two teams continued to battle at the start of the second half as the score was tied four times in the first eight minutes. With the score tied at 29-29 with 11:23 remaining in the game, the Tigers got five straight points from Watt to take a 36-29 lead. The Pride responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 36-36 with 6:40 to play. The two teams traded baskets and following an Aamira Terry jumper at 4:13, the game was knotted at 39-39. Kandace Davis hit a lay-up at 2:47 to put the Tigers on top 41-39. That however would be the last lead the Tigers would hold in the contest. Evans hit a jumper at 2:20 to tie the game at 41-41 and jumpstart an 8-0 run to close the game.
Snowden would add five rebounds and three steals to go along with her nine points. Shanae Baker-Brice contributed eight points, six rebounds and six assists for the Tigers. Davis and Katrina Wheeler led the Tigers on the boards with eight apiece.
Evans finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead the way for the Pride. Terry contributed nine points and six rebounds while Jess Fuller had eight points, five rebounds and four blocked shots.
Towson wraps up its home schedule on Sunday, February 28 when the Tigers host Delaware at 2:00 p.m. The Tigers will take time to honor its five seniors playing in their final home game prior to the tip.
