TOWSON, Md. – Senior midfielder Hillary Fratzke scored a career-high six goals and added eight draw controls as the 10th-ranked Tigers (5-1) posted their fifth win in the last six games with a 23-12 non-conference victory over the University of Richmond (3-6) at Johnny Unitas® Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Led by Fratzke's 37th career “hat trick,” the Tigers posted the second-highest single-game goal total in school history with their 23 goals. The Tigers set the school record with 27 goals against Frostburg State on April 27, 1984.
“We had a really good game offensively today,” Towson Coach Missy Doherty said. “Nearly half of our goals were assisted, so we are starting to make those connecting passes. We just have to continue to improve with a tough stretch against Stanford, Maryland and Delaware coming up.”
Fratzke gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes by scoring back-to-back goals off assists from senior defender Megan Mullis and senior midfielder Nikki Marcinik.
The teams traded goals three times before freshman attacker Olivia Turner ignited a four-goal Towson run with the first goal of her college career, converting a pass from senior attacker Jacie Kendall with 17:18 remaining in the first half.
After Kendall scored to give Towson a 7-3 lead, sophomore midfielder Jackie LaMonica tallied back-to-back free-position goals for a six-goal advantage with 12:20 left in the period.
Junior attacker Danielle Schaevitz ended the Tigers' run with a free-position goal with 10:19 remaining in the first half before sophomore midfielder Sam Tajirian followed with her first goal of the season off an assist from junior midfielder Anne Ryan.
But, the Tigers responded with another four-goal run, including a pair of goals from junior attacker Jess Dunn, to extend the margin to 13-5 with 4:57 remaining in the first half.
Led by a goal and an assist from sophomore midfielder Mary Flowers, the Spiders scored three consecutive goals over a four-minute span to narrow the deficit to 13-8 before Fratzke ended the first half scoring with an unassisted goal with ten seconds left.
Just 51 seconds into the second half, Fratzke took a pass from Dunn and scored her fourth goal of the game to start a four-goal run by the Tigers, who led by 18-8 with 26:25 remaining.
Led by a pair of goals by Flowers, the Spiders responded with three consecutive goals to trim the margin to 18-11 with 21:26 left, but the Tigers countered with three goals in a row to regain a ten-goal advantage with 14:34 remaining.
Freshman attacker Sam Stevenson scored on a free-position shot with 10:24 remaining before Turner and sophomore midfielder Katie Cloud ended the scoring in the final nine minutes.
While Fratzke led the Tigers with six goals, Dunn and LaMonica each contributed three goals with an assist in the victory for Towson, which outshot Richmond by a 48-21 margin.
Marcinik added two goals and added two assists in addition to becoming the ninth player in school history to score 100 career goals.
“Nikki has been a pivotal player for us throughout her career and thankfully, she has been doing a great job in the midfield for us whether it is scoring or getting draw controls or causing turnovers,” Coach Doherty said. “We are looking for her to continue to score the way she did today for us.”
Flowers led the Spiders with five goals and an assist while Schaevitz and sophomore attacker Molly Early each scored two goals. Senior goalkeeper Erica Marrocco made 16 saves for the Spiders, who lost for the second time in the last three games.
The Tigers will be idle until next Sunday afternoon when they host Stanford University in the first-ever meeting between the two teams at Unitas Stadium at 1 p.m.
