TOWSON, Md. – Senior attacker Jacie Kendall scored a career-high five goals and added an assist to lead the eighth-ranked Tigers (8-3, 2-1) to their second win in the last three games, an 18-5 Colonial Athletic Association victory over George Mason University (3-8, 0-2) at Johnny Unitas® Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Kendall scored three of her five goals in the first half as the Tigers built a 9-2 half-time lead en route to the victory.
“I think we did some things today well that we were trying to do regardless of who we played,” Towson Coach Missy Doherty said. “We wanted to shoot better because we had a poor effort on Friday night. We scored on nearly half of our shots, so the team did a good job.
“We still need to be smarter in our shot selection,” Coach Doherty added. “Most of the goalies we will face are tall and if we shoot high, they will make the save. But, we came out shooting the ball well today and made some better decisions.”
After the Tigers built a quick 2-0 lead in the opening 1:21 of the first half, sophomore midfielder Emily Ellisen narrowed the Patriots' deficit to 2-1 on a free-position shot with 28:08 left in the period.
However, the Tigers ran off four straight goals over a four-minute span to take a commanding 6-1 advantage with 23:19 remaining in the first half. Kendall scored a goal and added an assist during the spurt.
Sophomore midfielder Julianne Tela ended the Tigers' run with her first goal of the season off a pass from junior midfielder Chelsea Gamble with 21:54 remaining. But, the Tigers ended the first half by scoring three unanswered goals to take a 9-2 lead at the intermission.
Gamble and junior attacker Madalyn Jamison scored back-to-back goals to open the second half to narrow the margin to 9-4 with 25:31 remaining. With 23:16 left, senior midfielder Hillary Fratzke scored to give Towson a 10-4 advantage before Ellisen answered just 24 seconds later with her second goal of the game.
But, the Tigers held George Mason scoreless for the final 22 minutes and scored eight unanswered goals to seal the victory. Kendall and senior midfielder Nikki Marcinik each had two goals during the spurt for the Tigers.
While Kendall led the Tigers with her career-high six-point effort on Sunday, Marcinik added a career-high five-point effort with two goals and a career-high three assists. Fratzke tallied the 40th “hat trick” of her career with three goals and two assists.
Ellisen led the Patriots with two goals while Gamble added a goal and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Sara Longobucco made 14 saves for the Patriots, who were outshot by a 39-14 margin.
The Tigers will begin a three-game road trip on Friday night when they travel to Old Dominion for a 7 p.m. game against the Lady Monarchs. Meanwhile, the Patriots wrap up their three-game road trip on Tuesday night at fifth-ranked Virginia.
