Fratzke Leads #11 Tigers Past ODU, 13-11

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior midfielder Hillary Fratzke scored five goals and added an assist as the 11th-ranked Tigers (9-3, 3-1) held off a late rally by Old Dominion University (2-9, 0-3) to earn their third win in the last four games, a 13-11 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Lady Monarchs at the Powhatan Sports Complex on Friday evening.

The win allowed the Tigers to match the best 12-game start to a season in school history. It is the fifth time in school history that the Tigers have had a 9-3 record after 12 games.

The Lady Monarchs took a quick 1-0 lead just 2:12 into the first half as senior midfielder Saratu Dodo scored an unassisted goal past sophomore goalkeeper Mary Teeters.

But, the Tigers answered with back-to-back goals from sophomore midfielder Jackie LaMonica and junior attacker Jess Dunn to take a 2-1 lead with 23:33 remaining in the first half.

The teams traded goals twice before Dodo scored her second goal of the game with 9:26 left in the opening stanza to tie the game at 4-4. Just 53 seconds later, Fratzke scored to regain the Tigers' one-goal lead and ignite a three-goal spurt.

However, senior attacker Ashley Kellogg scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Lisa Bernardini with 23 seconds remaining in the first half to cut the Old Dominion deficit to 7-5 at the intermission.

The teams traded goals in the opening two minutes of the second half before senior attacker Jacie Kendall scored an unassisted goal to give Towson a 9-6 advantage with 23:31 left.

After Kellogg scored off a feed from Dodo with 19:23 remaining in the second half, Fratzke scored an unassisted goal to begin a quick three-goal run by the Tigers in just 52 seconds, upping their advantage to 12-7 with 17:21 left in regulation.

Kellogg and senior attacker Nicole McMahon countered the Tigers' run with back-to-back goals to narrow the margin to 12-9 with 12:21 remaining.

Fratzke extended the Tigers' lead to 13-9 with her fifth goal of the game, an unassisted marker past sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Geary. But, Kellogg answered and scored two consecutive goals to trim the Lady Monarchs' deficit to 13-11 with 1:33 remaining.

However, the Tigers held off the Lady Monarchs in the final 90 seconds to earn the victory.

While Fratzke led the Tigers with her six-point effort, Dunn contributed three goals along with a two-goal, one-assist performance from Kendall.

Kellogg led the Lady Monarchs with five goals while Dodo added two goals and an assist. Geary made 18 saves in a losing effort for Old Dominion, which was outshot by a 40-23 margin.

The Tigers will travel to William & Mary on Sunday afternoon for a 1 p.m. game against the Tribe, which defeated Delaware by an 18-12 margin on Friday night. It will be a rematch of last year's CAA semi-final, which Towson won by a 15-10 score.
