TOWSON, Md. - Katie DeFilippo's goal in overtime lifted the Tigers to a 3-2 come from behind win over West Chester on Friday evening. DeFilippo scored her first two goals of the season to help lift Towson (4-3) to the victory.
"I'm thrilled to get the victory tonight, especially since the team seemed to dig deep and battle back," said Coach Michelle Webber. "Katie and Kim Schnell really stepped up and played with a passion and led this team when we needed them too."
Towson founds itself in an early hole as West Chester tallied the first two goals of the game. Alisha Moran and Kate Zunski scored to give the Golden Rams a 2-0 advantage. Moran's goal came at 11:34 while Zunski's found the net at 13:09.
DeFilippo's score the first of her two tallies to make it a 2-1 game at 16:06 of the first half. Fellow junior Jamie Salvador knotted the score at 2-2 with her second goal of the game. Salvador's goal came at 17:53 off a long shot from the far side of the cage that found the corner of the net on the near side.
The score was tied at the break while West Chester held an 8-5 advantage in shots. The Golden Rams also had four penalty corners to the Tigers' three in the first half.
The second half was a fairly even 35 minutes of action and since it remained tied the game headed to seven-on-seven overtime. Both teams registered seven shots in the second half with West Chester holding an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.
In overtime, the Tigers were awarded a penalty corner with 10:10 remaining. Schnell inserted the ball and was able to find DeFilippo with the pass for the goal.
Whitney Clugston made three saves to earn the win in goal for the Tigers. Schnell had a defensive save for the Tigers, her fourth of the season. Kristen Arnold started the game in net for West Chester and made two saves while surrendering two goals. Gabby Panasiewicz played the second half and overtime for the Golden Rams and made three saves while allowing one goal.
West Chester outshot the Tigers 15-13 in the game and held a 12-9 advantage in penalty corners.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, September 19 when they face #11 Boston College in College Park, Md. at noon.
