Kay Banjo Leads Tigers Past Loyola, 3-2

TOWSON, Md. – Freshman forward Kay Banjo scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner in the 52nd minute, as the Tigers (6-0-0) upped their win streak to six straight games with a 3-2 non-conference victory over Loyola University Maryland (1-3-1) at the Towson Center Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Banjo, who leads the Tigers with five goals this season, recorded his career two-goal game as the Tigers snapped a four-game winless streak against the Greyhounds. It was the Tigers' first win over Loyola since September 11, 2005.

“Kay fits in well with the chemistry of the team and works hard,” Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said. “He keeps himself grounded and doesn't get too far ahead of himself. He has really done well so far this season.”

The Greyhounds took a quick 1-0 lead in the third minute after senior forward Phil Bannister was fouled inside the penalty area by senior defender Roslin Nzokou to give Loyola a penalty kick. Bannister converted the attempt for his second goal of the season past freshman goalkeeper Angelo Viteritti.

But, the Greyhounds' advantage was short-lived. In the 16th minute, Loyola sophomore defender Gerwyn Jones was called for a handball foul inside the penalty area, giving the Tigers a penalty kick of their own. Senior midfielder Marco Mangione converted the attempt for his fourth goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1.

With 1:51 remaining in the first half, the Tigers took a 2-1 lead when Banjo scored off a rebound of his own shot past senior goalkeeper Kyle Wittman.

Just over six minutes into the second half, Banjo upped the Tigers' cushion to 3-1 when he gathered a loose ball and scored on a sharp angle shot for his second goal of the game.

However, the Greyhounds responded just 15 seconds later when Bannister scored his second goal of the game by converting a pass from freshman forward Stephen Dooley.

The Greyhounds, who outshot Towson by a 21-16 margin, had several chances to tie the game in the final 38 minutes, but Viteritti made six of his season-high nine saves to retain the Tigers' one-goal advantage.

“Angelo had a big game for us today,” said Coach Olszewski. “Every time he was called upon, he answered the call. He gave us a big lift in goal.”

While Viteritti made nine saves for the Tigers, Wittman had five saves for Loyola, which lost for the third time in the last four games.

The Tigers will finish their five-game homestand on Saturday afternoon when they open their Colonial Athletic Association schedule against James Madison at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds will host UMBC on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Ridley Athletic Complex
