TOWSON, Md. – Junior forward Patrick Innes scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute as James Madison University (6-1-0, 1-0-0) rallied from a 2-0 half-time deficit to earn a 3-2 victory over the Tigers (6-1-0, 0-1-0) in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at the Towson Center Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Innes, who recorded his first goal of the season, gave James Madison the victory when he scored off a rebound from senior forward CJ Sapong with 6:48 remaining in the overtime period.
“James Madison came out with a lot of energy in the second half and we weren't able to match that energy,” Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said. “There were some lapses on defense for us in the second half and overtime and they were able to take advantage of those chances.”
Trailing by 2-0 to start the second half, the Dukes scored twice in a five-minute span to tie the game midway through the period. With 21:06 remaining, sophomore midfielder Christian McLaughlin scored an unassisted goal off a restart to narrow the margin to 2-1.
Less than five minutes later, the Dukes tied the game at 2-2 when sophomore forward Markus Bjorkheim took a pass from Sapong and scored his third goal of the season past freshman goalkeeper Angelo Viteritti.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead midway through the first half by scoring twice in a four-minute span. With 21:58 left in the opening stanza, senior midfielder Marco Mangione scored his fifth goal of the season on a header shot past senior goalkeeper Ken Manahan.
The Tigers upped the advantage to 2-0 in the 28th minute when junior forward Liam Maloney scored his third goal of the season off assists from Mangione and senior defender Roslin Nzokou.
Viteritti, who made his fourth straight start, tied his season high by making nine saves, including six in the second half. Meanwhile, Manahan had two saves for the Dukes, who outshot Towson by a 26-8 margin.
The loss snapped the Tigers' six-game win streak.
The Tigers, who finished a five-game homestand on Saturday afternoon, will travel to William & Mary on Friday night for a 7 p.m. game against the Tribe. Meanwhile, the Dukes will continue their five-game road trip by traveling to Northeastern next Saturday afternoon.
