TOWSON, Md. - Playing their first home conference game of the season, the Tigers (1-5-1, 0-2-0) received six saves from their senior captain, goalkeeper John Steele. However, the William & Mary Tribe (6-3-0, 3-0-0) scored midway through the second half en-route to a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
Patrick O'Brien's goal 64:42 into the contest proved to be the eventual game-winner. The goal was scored on an odd sequence that saw the ball served in front of the net before O'Brien headed it past Steele to give William & Mary the 1-0 lead.
The Tigers were able to gain offensive chances in the game, as they had 12 shots for the game. Enrico Skrypzak, Olakunle Banjo and Matteo Vertucci each had multiple shots for Towson. Skrypzak led the team with four in the contest.
“It's always difficult when you are on the losing end of something like this,” Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said. “It's a young group and we played hard to the very end.“
William & Mary goalie Colin Smolinsky made three saves to record his fifth shutout of the season, which leads the Colonial Athletic Association.
The Tigers will next face the Hofstra Pride, welcoming them to the Tiger Soccer Complex Wednesday, Oct. 5. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m.
