DeFilippo Leads Tigers to Overtime Victory

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Just 50 seconds into overtime, senior Katie DeFilippo scored to give the Towson University field hockey team a 1-0 victory over Appalachian Sate on Friday afternoon. The Tigers (8-6) posted their third straight shutout over the Mountaineers (1-12).

"Today might not have gone as we wanted it to but it's great to get out of here with a victory," said Coach Michelle Webber. "The defense helped us out in spots and Katie came through when we needed her."

Towson had its chances in the first period as the Tigers recorded 10 shots but could not find the back of the net on any of them. Appalachian State had three shots in the first 35 minutes including a penalty stroke by Brooklyn Shearer. However Towson goalie Christina Siwiec came up big with a save on the stroke.

In addition to its 10-3 edge in shots in the first half, the Tigers held a 5-2 edge in penalty corners.

Towson needed a strong performance from its defense in the second half as Appalachian State was awarded seven penalty corners within a seven minute span. However the Tiger defense kept the Mountaineers from finding the back of the net.

Towson finished the second half with a 15-4 edge in shots but with zeros still on the scoreboard, the two teams headed to overtime.

Just 13 seconds into the seven-on-seven overtime period, DeFilippo was able to get off a shot but Bridgette Street recorded the save for the Mountaineers. Less than 40 seconds later, DeFilippo collected a ball just over midfield and took it in on a long run to beat the goalie and give the Tigers the win.

Siwiec made four saves for her eighth win of the season and the team's second shutout of the year. Street made 14 saves for the Mountaineers as Anna Long added a defensive save.

The Tigers finished the game with a 27-7 advantage in shots and a 10-9 edge in penalty corners.

Towson returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 16 when it hosts Bucknell. That game will be played on the University of Maryland's campus at noon.
