Tigers Edge UNC Wilmington in OT, 1-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Freshman midfielder Katlyn Axenfeld scored the game's only goal in the 93rd minute to lead the Tigers (8-8-0, 3-5-0) to their third win in the last four games, a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association overtime victory over UNC Wilmington (2-13-0, 0-7-0) at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

In earning their first win over the Seahawks since 1994, the Tigers also remained in the hunt for a berth in the CAA Tournament. With three games remaining, the Tigers are in 10th place in the CAA standings, but are just two points out of sixth place. The top six teams qualify for the CAA Tournament.

"This was a big win for us," Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. "I am really proud of our team's effort, especially after a disappointing loss on Friday. It would have been very easy to just pack it up and not continue to fight, but our players responded and fought to get a win that we really deserved.

"We have some seniors on this team that really want to reach the postseason and they are ready to do whatever is needed to make that happen," Paynter said. "It's their resolve and their leadership that have played a major role in our success over the last couple of weeks."

Axenfeld, who scored her second game-winning goal of the season, headed in a corner kick at the 92:25 mark from freshman forward Sofia Read to give the Tigers their third overtime win of the year.

Each team had a good chance to score during regulation. With 8:25 remaining in the first half, UNC Wilmington junior defender Lindsay Henry hit the crossbar on a 30-yard blast. Just over 30 seconds later, Towson junior forward Cheyenne Skidmore had a sliding shot from 10 yards away hit the crossbar.

While Axenfeld tallied her second goal of the year, senior goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak made six saves, including the 300th of her career, to earn her second shutout of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Chandler Follett made four saves in a losing effort for the Seahawks, who were outshot by a 15-13 margin.

The Tigers, who have scored 10 goals in their last four games, will return to the Tiger Soccer Complex for their final two home games of the season. After hosting Drexel on Friday afternoon, the Tigers will celebrate Senior Day by entertaining Delaware in a 1 p.m. game.

Meanwhile, UNC Wilmington will host Northeastern next Friday night at 7 p.m.
