TOWSON, Md. - A pair of first half goals lifted the Towson University field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (6-5) got four saves from redshirt freshman Christina Siwiec to post their first shutout since Sept. 10, 2010.
"It was nice to get home and get a victory today," said Coach Michelle Webber. "I was very happy with the way the defense stepped up and helped us get the shutout."
The Tigers peppered Red Flash goalie, Katelyn Vitali with plenty of shots early but it took until the 22nd minute of play for one of their shots to find the back of the net. Sophomore Kathleen Morris controlled the rebound off a shot from one of her teammates and pushed her shot home. Morris' goal was her third of the season and gave Towson the early advantage.
Towson added to its lead in the 31st minute as senior Katie DeFilippo took a ball on a long run and was able to beat the goalie. It was DeFillipo's third goal of the season and gave the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.
The Tigers held a 12-1 advantage in shots at halftime while St. Francis (Pa.) had a 4-3 edge in penalty corners.
Both teams had their opportunities in the second stanza but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Red Flash outshot the Tigers 7-3 in the second half but Towson got a couple of big saves from Siwiec and a defensive save from senior Kim Schnell. St. Francis also had an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners in the second half.
Siwiec made four saves while playing the first 68:25 in net for the Tigers. Freshman Tashani Dickson played the final 1:35 in goal for the Tigers and was not forced to make a save. Vitali finished with 10 saves for the Red Flash in the loss.
Towson finished the game with a 15-8 advantage in shots while the Red Flash had a 15-6 edge in penalty corners.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, Oct. 7 when they host #1 Old Dominion at Johnny Unitas® Stadium at 6 p.m.
