BROOKLINE, Mass. –
Looking for their first conference win of the season, the Tigers received three
saves from senior goalkeeper John Steele.
However, Don Anding's first goal of
the season with 3:18 remaining in regulation helped the Northeastern Huskies
(8-4-2, 4-2-1 CAA) to a 1-0 victory over Towson (1-10-1, 0-7-0 CAA) Wednesday
evening.
"Overall, we tightened some things up defensively," Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said. "As tough as this is to swallow, we feel like we can still see some progress."
It was a defensive struggle for much of the game, as the
teams combined for just five shots on goal, four by Northeastern. The Tigers were
led by three players—Josh Spivey, Matteo Vertucci and Christian Höfer—who all registered two
shots.
The Huskies made a late charge to pull ahead in the game.
Steele was able to make the save on Josh
Semerene's shot 78:47 into the contest. Then, after two shots were blocked
less than two minutes later, Steele came up big again when he saved Mike Kennedy's shot following a
Northeastern corner kick. Kennedy finished with a game high six shots in the
contest.
However, Anding scored an unassisted goal with under five
minutes remaining in regulation to give the Huskies the final 1-0 advantage.
The Tigers will return to the Tiger Soccer Complex Saturday,
Oct. 22, when the team will face UNC Wilmington. The game will begin at 1:00
p.m.
