TOWSON, Md. – Olakunle Banjo and Phil Martinelli each scored to lead the Tigers to their first conference victory of the season Saturday, a 2-1 home win against the UNC Wilmington Seahawks (3-11-1, 1-7-1 CAA).
Banjo and Martinelli each scored in the second half for Towson (2-10-1, 1-7-1 CAA), Saturday's victory marked the team's first win since Sept. 20 when the team was victorious over Albany by a 4-1 score.
“The CAA is so competitive game in and game out,” Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said. “A lot of guys have been getting minutes. It's a very young team that we have and ups and downs are going to happen. The players know they are making progress and it's reflective in the play on the field.”
Banjo scored the game's first goal early in the second half after a rebound came loose and Banjo beat Seahawks goalkeeper Brandon Miller for his fourth goal of the season. Banjo now leads the team with 10 points this season. Miller made six saves in the game.
The Seahawks responded less than a minute later when Thomas Driver took a shot that went past Towson goalie John Steele and evened the score at 1-1, 49:40 into the game.
Martinelli then scored the game winning goal with less than 30 minutes remaining in regulation to give the Tigers the 2-1 win. Martinelli has three goals this season.
The Tigers return to the Tiger Soccer Complex Wednesday Oct. 26 when the team will face rival Delaware. The game will begin at 3:00 p.m.
