NEWARK, Del. - The Towson University field hockey team was unable to overcome a three-goal deficit at halftime and fell to Delaware, 3-1 on Sunday. Junior Janine Kovach scored her fourth goal of the season for the Tigers (8-9, 2-4 CAA).
"I thought we did a better job of pressuring their defense in the second half but just couldn't finish our opportunities," said Coach Michelle Webber.
The Tigers found themselves down early to the Blue Hens as Kelsey McKee scored off a penalty corner in the 4th minute of the game. McKee's goal was assisted by Kayla Schweitzer and Carley Hecht.
Delaware added to its lead in the 11th minute as Nicole Onorato tallied an unassisted goal. The Blue Hens made it a 3-0 game as Clare O'Malley scored in the 30th minute off an assist from Hecht.
Delaware had six shots to the Tigers' three in the first half and the Blue Hens had the only two penalty corners of the half.
The Tigers were able to break through in the 46th minute as Kovach found the back of the net. Fellow junior Megan Penza crossed a ball from the right side of the net and Kovach was able to tip it home.
Towson had a few other chances in the game but was unable to convert.
Delaware finished the game with a 12-10 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in penalty corners.
Noelle Diana made six saves in goal to earn the win for the Blue Hens. Redshirt freshman Christina Siwiec made four saves in goal for the Tigers.
Towson returns to Johnny Unitas® Stadium for its final two games of the regular season. The Tigers will host Hofstra on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
