Tigers Shutout Hofstra, 3-0

TOWSON, Md. - A strong all-around team effort led the Towson University field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Hofstra in Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday night. The Tigers (9-9, 3-4 CAA) snapped a three-game losing streak with their third shutout of the season.

"I thought we played very well tonight," said Coach Michelle Webber. "The defense did a nice job of stepping up and containing their goal scorers."

The Tigers needed just 4:41 to get on the board in the game. Junior Kate Nolan collected a deflection off the Hofstra goalie and pushed it home for her fourth goal of the season.

Towson extended its lead to 2-0 just 1:12 later. After Hofstra's Kerry Kiddoo made a defensive save, junior Kasie Nurko collected the rebound and scored her fifth goal of the season.

The Tigers led 2-0 at the half despite being outshot 5-4 in the first 35 minutes of play. Both teams had four penalty corners in the first stanza.

Hofstra applied pressure in the second half as the Pride outshot the Tigers 9-4 in the half. However, the Tigers were able to make one of their four shots count as junior Janine Kovach scored in the 38th minute of the contest. Kovach's goal was her fifth of the season and was assisted by Nurko.

The Pride finished the game with a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 13-6 edge in penalty corners.

The Tiger defense did a solid job of containing a Pride team that had scored 74 goals on the year. Towson held Genna Kovar, who led the nation in points per game (3.67) to just four shots in the game.

Redshirt freshman Christina Siwiec made five saves to earn her ninth win of the year in goal. Amanda Heyde made two saves while playing the first 37:09 of the game in goal. Meredith Golden played the remainder of the game in goal for Hofstra and was not forced to make a save.

The Tigers wrap up the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 30 when they host #14 Northeastern in Johnny Unitas® Stadium at noon. Towson will honor its seven seniors prior to the start of that contest.
