Tigers Upset #14 Northeastern, 1-0

TOWSON, Md. - A first half goal from senior Katie DeFilippo proved to be the difference as the Towson University field hockey team upset #14 Northeastern 1-0 on Sunday in the regular season finale for both teams. The Tigers' (10-9, 4-4 CAA) win combined with Drexel's loss gives Towson a berth in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.

"I'm extremely proud of our girls today," said Coach Michelle Webber. "We knew what we needed to take care of this weekend and we did it."

The Tigers wasted little time getting on the board as they were awarded a penalty corner at 6:45. After the ball was inserted senior Jamie Salvador took a shot from the top of the circle on the near side. Salvador's shot was deflected in front of the net into the goal by DeFilippo.

DeFilippo's goal was her team leading sixth of the season and also gave her 61 points for her career, moving her into the top five in career scoring at Towson.

The Tigers maintained that 1-0 lead at the half despite being outshot 6-3 in the first half. Northeastern (13-6, 5-3 CAA) held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners in the first 35 minutes of the contest.

Both teams had their opportunities in the second half. With 2:34 remaining in the game, Northeastern pulled goalie Lizzie Priest for an extra player on the field. The Huskies were awarded a penalty corner as time expired but were unable to convert it and the Tigers claimed the victory.

Towson outshot the Huskies 8-5 in the second half and the two squads finished the game with 11 shots each. Each team had three penalty corners in the second half and Northeastern finished the game with a 7-6 edge in corners.

Redshirt freshman Christina Siwiec made five saves to earn her second straight shutout for the Tigers. Priest made four saves for Northeastern, who also got a defensive save from Keelin Quinn.

The Tigers, winners of two straight will be back in action when the CAA Tournament begins on Thursday, Nov. 3 on Old Dominion's campus. Towson who finished tied with Delaware and James Madison, will be the sixth seed and face #3 Hofstra on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
