WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Matt Fry carded a 69 in the final round of the Joe Agee Invitational at Colonial Heritage Golf Club as the Tigers finished fourth in the string 13-team field.
Fry, who finished the tournament with a three-round score of 222, earned a three-under score of 69 by making four birdies. He had the lowest round of any of the 72 golfers in the tournament. His three-round total of 222 earned him a tie for seventh place overall.
"Matt played really well today," said Coach Brian Yaniger. "The conditions were challenging and it was pretty windy but he handled it well."
The Tigers, who had a 304 in the first round and a 295 in the second round, had a 306 in the final round. Towson finished fourth with a tournament total of 905.
Longwood (291-287-293=871) won the tournament as Austin Gray was the medalist with a 217. Old Dominion (303-297-297=897) came on strong in the final round to finish second while High Point (299-299-301=899) finished third, two strokes behind ODU.
By finishing fourth in the tournament, the Tigers edged Bucknell (307-311-291=909) by four strokes. Gardner-Webb took sixth place (311-300-300=911).
Junior Justin Koehler, who had scores of 72 and 74 in the first two rounds, carded an 80 in the final round to finish with a 226, good for 15th place. Sophomore Joe Gunerman tied for 27th place with a 229 while Trevor Sluman finished with a 234, tied for 34th place.
"Except for Matt, we struggled a little bit today," added Yaniger. "But, I like this group. Every so often, I see glimpses of how good we can be and that makes me excited."
