TOWSON Md.- Kasie Nurko scored two goals to help the Tigers to 3-1 victory over the William & Mary Tribe Sunday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
“We've made a few changes defensively and so far it has worked out for us,” Towson Coach Michelle Webber said. “The conference games are sometimes tougher. There are some really good teams in our conference.”
After Nurko scored off a rebound to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead 9:33 into the game, the Tigers defense shutout the Tribe for the rest of the half, as Towson (7-6, 2-3 CAA) led 1-0 heading to the second half.
Towson's Katie DeFilippo then scored off a corner from close range, to give Towson a 2-0 advantage with around 20 minutes remaining in the contest. Senior Kim Schnell and junior Janine Kovach recorded the assists on DeFilippo's goal as it game off a penalty corner.
William & Mary (6-6, 1-4 CAA) answered when Emma Clifton scored her third goal of the season, after emerging in front and getting the ball past Towson goalie Christina Siwiec, to bring the Tribe to within 2-1 in the 54th minute.
But less than three minutes later, Nurko's fourth goal of the season gave Towson a 3-1 lead. Nurko deflected a ball from a penalty corner past the Tribe's Camilla Hill at 56:07 of the game.
William & Mary finished the game with an 11-10 edge in shots while both teams recorded eight penalty corners in the game.
Siwiec earned her seventh win of the season in goal while making three saves. Schnell, who had a pair of assists in the contest also recorded a defensive save for the Tigers. Hill made five saves in the loss for the Tribe.
The Tigers are back in action against Appalachian State on Friday, Oct. 14. That game will take place on Drexel's campus in Philadelphia, Pa. at 2:30 p.m.
