TOWSON, Md. – Playing in his final college game, senior goalkeeper John Steele (Dorset, England) made six saves, including five in the first half, to lead the Tigers (3-11-2, 2-8-1) to a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Georgia State University (12-6-1, 6-5-0) at the Tiger Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The win marked the Tigers' first shutout of the season while Georgia State had its two-game win streak snapped.
“It's been a young group this year and I can't give any more credit to the entire team for continuing to give everything they had,” Coach Frank Olszewski said. “I wish the season wasn't ending because I think the guys were playing their best soccer over the last few weeks.
“I also couldn't be happier for John Steele,” Olszewski added. “He came up big today and had been so close to getting that shutout during the season and he finally got one today.”
The Tigers took a very early 1-0 lead in the third minute when freshman defender Daniel Grundei scored the first goal of his college career. He collected a loose ball in the penalty area after a pass from sophomore forward Enrico Skrypzak and scored on a shot to the left corner. It was the first goal allowed by the Panthers since Oct. 23 against James Madison.
From there, Steele and the Tiger defense held on to earn their sixth win over Georgia State in seven all-time meetings.
Junior goalkeeper Vincent Foermer made one save in the second half for the Panthers, who outshot Towson by a 17-9 margin.
While the Tigers played in their final game of the season on Saturday, the Panthers will advance to the CAA Tournament next weekend at Old Dominion.
