Catanzaro Leads Tigers Past Southern Connecticut

TOWSON, Md. -  Led by junior Kacy Catanzaro, who finished first on vault and balance beam, the Tigers (14-1) extended their winning streak to ten with a dual meet victory over Southern Connecticut University (9-4) in the Towson Center on Friday evening.

The Tigers won the meet with a 191.775 team score while the Owls had a 187.775 team score.

Competing in three events, Catanzaro won vault and balance beam in addition to finishing second on bars. She had a 9.775 on vault, a 9.675 on beam and a 9.725 score on bars.

On bars, she finished second behind her teammate, freshman Alexa Davis.

The Tigers started the competition on vault and earned a 48.025 team score as Catanzaro led the way with her 9.775 score. Junior Avis Hixon was second on vault with a 9.675 score for the Tigers while junior Lindsay Poplaski contributed a 9.625 score. Sophomore Rebecca Brady of Southern Connecticut tied for second place with a 9.675 score.

In the second rotation, the Tigers competed on bars and extended their lead with a 48.40 team score. Davis finished first in the meet with a career best 9.775 score on bars. Senior Emily Hill and Catanzaro tied for second place with 9.725 scores while junior Kady Sullivan tied for fourth place with a 9.625 score. On bars, the Tigers took five of the top six places.

At the midway point of the meet, the Tigers had opened up a significant lead with a 96.425 team score while Southern Connecticut had a 94.100 score.

However, the Tigers struggled on balance beam and were forced to count two falls. They earned a 46.80 team score on the beam, led by Catanzaro and her 9.675 score. Davis added a 9.55 beam score while junior Alyssa Dittman had a 9.50 score on beam.

Junior Mallory Miller of Southern Connecticut took third place on beam with a 9.525 score.

"We started off very well on vault and did a great job on bars," said Coach Vicki Chliszczyk. "Obviously, our beam work was rough but it wasn't as bad as it looked. We just missed a few things here and there and we will get them fixed.

"If we can combine this week's bar work with last week's beam, we will have things going in the right direction," she added.

The Tigers concluded the meet with another outstanding performance on floor exercise. Led by sophomore Britney Russell, who took first place with a 9.80 score, the Tigers earned a 48.55 team score. Hixon finished second on floor (9.725) while Sullivan tied with Brady (9.70) for third place.

Davis earned a 9.675 floor score while Poplaski had a 9.65 score.

Competing as an all-around for the second meet in a row, Poplaski took first place with a 37.80 score. Miller was second (37.725).

The Tigers return to action on Friday, March 4 when they visit the University of Pennsylvania for a 7:00 p.m. meet.
