Tigers Edged by Loyola in Defensive Affair

TOWSON, Md.Despite nine saves from senior goalkeeper Travis Love, the Tigers were unable to get any offense going as visiting Loyola (2-0) held off Towson (0-2) to earn a 3-2 victory at Unitas Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Senior attackman Matt Langan led the Greyhounds with two goals, including the game-winner late in the fourth quarter, as Loyola earned its fourth win in a row over the Tigers. Towson still leads the all-time series by a 27-26 margin.

"It was one of the best defensive efforts I have ever seen from any team I have ever coached," Towson Coach Tony Seaman said. "But, it was one of the worst shooting efforts I have ever seen. It was one of those games where both teams got caught in the defensive end a lot. It's a tough loss."

After a scoreless first quarter, the Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead when Langan scored off a feed from graduate student midfielder Chris Basler with 6:21 remaining in the half.

But, the Tigers answered less than four minutes later when senior midfielder Pat Britton tied the game at 1-1 with his third goal of the season, scoring off an assist from sophomore attackman Matt Hughes.

Less than five minutes into the third quarter, the Tigers took a 2-1 lead when sophomore midfielder Alec Jernstedt (pictured right)scored the first goal of his college career after receiving a pass from senior Peter Mezzanotte in transition. <dfn><a href=Alec Jernstedt" width="300" height="225">

The Tigers held onto the one-goal lead until the final six minutes of regulation. With 5:43 remaining, sophomore attackman Mike Sawyer tied the game at 2-2 when he took a feed from sophomore midfielder Davis Butts and scored past senior goalkeeper Travis Love.

Then, Langan gave the Greyhounds a one-goal advantage with 2:40 remaining when he scored his second goal of the game, an unassisted marker past Love for a 3-2 edge.

The Tigers had one last chance to tie the game but Hughes' shot with four seconds left was blocked by a Loyola defender and the Greyhounds held on for the victory.

While Love made nine saves in a losing effort for the Tigers, senior goalkeeper Jake Hagelin posted six saves for the Greyhounds, who won their second straight one-goal game.

The Tigers will play their first road game of the season next Saturday when they take on Mount St. Mary's at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds will open their ECAC schedule at home against Bellarmine at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
