TOWSON, Md. - A three-run first inning set the tone for the Towson softball team, as the Tigers went on to beat the Georgetown Hoyas in non-conference play, 9-4.

"You get better when you play more, so playing weekday games keeps us sharp," coach Lisa Costello said.

The Tigers (12-15) scored early and often, having four multiple run innings off four different Hoya pitchers. They also capitalized off Georgetown's (7-25) mistakes, advancing on errors and running the bases aggressively, as only five of the Tigers' runs were earned.

"We feed off each other very well," junior first baseman Andrea Stevenson said. "Today we played really well and were able to string some hits together"

The Tigers were led offensively by Stevenson who had two hits on three at bats, one run batted in and a walk, as well as senior shortstop Sammi DiPompo who went three for three at the plate with a triple and two runs batted in..

Left-fielder Rachel Miller, second baseman Lindsey Kent and right-fielder Kelli Lyons all added a hit for Towson.

"We were aggressive running the bases and we did a real nice job situationally hitting," Costello said. "A couple kids, especially in the middle of the game had 10-pitch at bats, fouled off a lot of tough pitches."

Dominique Ortega (3-7) pitched a complete game for Towson, giving up eight hits and two earned runs, while striking out three.

"She kept the ball down, kept the ball in the infield. She mixed speeds really well," Costello said. "She did what Dom does to be effective."

"She keeps getting stronger as the year goes on, so that's promising for us because we need her for sure," Costello added.

Wednesday Towson will face off against George Washington University, home at 3p.m., before going head to head with Colonial Athletic Conference opponent Drexel at home over the weekend.

"There's only so much you can get out of practice," Stevenson said of non-conference games. "The more games you play the better we get and the more confidence we get for the weekend games."
