Tigers Edge #9 James Madison in Overtime, 10-9

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Senior attacker Jess Dunn scored a game-high four goals, including the game-winning marker with 59 seconds left in the first segment of the overtime period, as the Tigers (7-6, 3-1) overcame a 4-0 first half deficit and earned their second straight win, a 10-9 Colonial Athletic Association overtime victory over ninth-ranked James Madison (9-3, 3-1) at the Dukes' JMU Lacrosse Complex on Friday evening.

The win marked the second straight season the Tigers have defeated a top 10 opponent. The Tigers edged eighth-ranked Stanford by a 10-9 margin last year at Johnny Unitas® Stadium.

For the second straight game, the Tigers found themselves in an early deficit as the Dukes scored four unanswered goals in the opening 14 minutes, including a goal and an assist from junior midfielder Caitlin McHugh.

But, the Tigers responded by scoring four straight goals, including a pair of markers from junior midfielder Jackie LaMonica, to tie the score at 4-4 with 6:36 remaining in the stanza.

McHugh scored her second goal of the game with 4:12 left in the first half before junior attacker Sarah Appelt tied the game with eight seconds remaining with an unassisted goal.

After the teams traded goals to open the second half, the Tigers took an 8-6 lead as Dunn scored a pair of goals in a four-minute span. The Dukes trimmed the deficit to 8-7 on a goal by junior midfielder Ashley Kimener before sophomore midfielder Kelly Custer upped the Tigers' advantage to 9-7 by scoring off a feed from Appelt.

However, the Dukes tied the game by scoring twice in the final 13 minutes to force overtime. Sophomore attacker Casey Ancarrow scored on a free-position shot with 12:20 left before senior attacker Mary Kate Lomady tied the game off an Ancarrow assist with 1:49 remaining.

The Dukes had one last chance to win the game with five seconds left in regulation, but Ancarrow's shot was thwarted by junior goalkeeper Mary Teeters to keep the game tied.

After the Tigers gained possession in the first segment of the first overtime period, Dunn gave the Tigers a 10-9 lead when she scored her fourth goal of the game, a free-position shot past junior goalkeeper Alex Menghetti. From there, the Tigers held James Madison without a shot in the overtime period.

While Dunn led the Tigers with four goals, Appelt scored two goals and two assists. LaMonica also contributed two goals and an assist for the Tigers, who were outshot by a 19-16 margin.

McHugh scored two goals with an assist in a losing effort for the Dukes while Ancarrow contributed a goal with two assists.
