TOWSON, Md. - Led by junior goalkeeper Mary Teeters, the Tiger defense had its best effort of the season by allowing just seven goals against Drexel (7-3, 1-0) on Friday afternoon at Unitas Stadium. However, the Dragons' defense was just as solid as Drexel escaped with a 7-5 Colonial Athletic Association victory.
Sophomore attacker Alyse Maiden scored two goals in the second half as the Dragons earned their second win in the last three games. In addition, the Dragons snapped a 17-game losing streak against the Tigers and earned their second win in the all-time series.
"We started to turn things around on the offensive end of the field, but unfortunately, we took a step backwards today," Towson Coach Sonia LaMonica said. "We weren't finishing our shots today, especially with our free position attempts. Defensively, I thought we did a nice job especially since Drexel has some offensive threats on its team."
The Tigers sprinted out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 18 minutes of the game, but the Dragons responded with four unanswered goals of their own to take a 4-3 lead at the intermission. Junior attacker Jaclyn Klunder scored twice during the spurt for the Dragons.
Early in the second half, senior attacker Jess Dunn tied the game at 4-4 with her second goal of the game, a free-position marker past senior goalkeeper Whitney Johnson. But, Maiden scored a pair of free-position goals in an eight-minute span for a 6-4 advantage.
With 13:22 remaining, sophomore midfielder Ashley Waldron trimmed the margin to 6-5 when she scored on a free-position shot, but the Dragons sealed the victory with 3:33 remaining when senior defender Katie Blazer tallied her eighth goal of the season with an unassisted marker.
Maiden and Klunder each scored two goals for the Dragons while Johnson made nine saves, including five in the second half.
Dunn scored two goals to lead the Tigers in a losing effort while Teeters posted 11 saves.
Drexel outshot Towson by a 24-22 margin while the Tigers had an 8-6 advantage in draw controls.
The Tigers will open a three-game road trip on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Hofstra University for a 1 p.m. game against the Pride. Meanwhile, Drexel will host Delaware on Sunday afternoon.
