Big First Half Leads Tigers to 5-1 Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Four first-half goals led the Towson University field hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Georgetown on Sunday morning. Towson (4-3) won its fourth straight game as junior Kasie Nurko scored a pair of goals.

"The team played a great game of hockey today," said Coach Michelle Webber. "They played good offense and nice pressure defense. They were determined to have fun in this game."

The Tigers didn't wait long to get on the scoreboard in this game. Just 46 seconds into the first half, sophomore Kathleen Morris collected the ball off a scramble in front of the net and poked it home for her first goal of the year.

Towson added to its lead in the 7th minute as Nurko scored off an assist from senior Katie DeFilippo. In the 30th minute, the Tigers increased their lead to 3-0 after being awarded a penalty corner. Senior Kim Schnell scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year. DeFilippo and fellow senior Samm McElvaney recorded the assists on Schnell's goal.

In the 32nd minute, freshman Courtney Branco scored her first career goal off an assist from freshman Ashley Rivera.

Towson held a 4-0 lead at the break after outshooting the Hoyas 10-2 in the first half.

Georgetown would get on the scoreboard in the 51st minute as Charlotte Tierney tallied an unassisted goal.

Towson would strike one more time in the game as Nurko recorded her second goal of the game in the final minute of play. DeFilippo recorded her third assist of the game on Nurko's tally.

Redshirt freshman Christina Siwiec earned the win in goal for the Tigers as she was forced to make just one save. Brianna Periera and Kelly Mosser split the time in goal as each made two saves for the Hoyas.

Towson finished the game outshooting Georgetown 18-5 and held a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, Sept. 23 when Colonial Athletic Association play begins at Virginia Commonwealth.
