Tigers Fall at Longwood, 1-0

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Tigers (0-3-1) played their second consecutive non-conference road game Saturday night, dropping a 1-0 contest against the Longwood Lancers (2-3-1).

Chris Saul's shot at 38:46 in the first half was the game's lone goal and the eventual game-winner for the Lancers.

Saul's goal came from 25-yards out to the far post and beat Towson goalkeeper John Steele for the 1-0 advantage late in the first half. Steele faced eight shots and made two saves for the Tigers.

Longwood came into the game after facing Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Lancers lost 1-0 after the Hokies scored a goal early in the second half to give them the lead for good.

Towson was led on offense Saturday by sophomore Olakunle Banjo. He was one of three Tigers with two shots in the game along with juniors Anthony Okodua and Phil Martinelli. Martinelli had entered the game with an assist in each of the team's last two games. His two assists lead the team this season.

“We had some chances, especially early on,” Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said. “We are fighting and competing. We're working on finishing the plays when we have them.”

The game was a physical contest, as each team was issued two yellow cards in the game. There were also 25 total fouls between the two teams.

Longwood goalie Joel Helmick made three saves in the shutout.

The Tigers will return home to the Tiger Soccer Complex on Tuesday, Sept. 20 when they play Albany in their final non-conference game of the season. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m.
