Tigers Dealt First Loss of Season

TOWSON, Md. – The Tigers returned from winter break with the hopes of extending their season-opening winning streak to six consecutive meets. However, the Maryland Terrapins received two individual victories from Megan Lafferty and defeated the Tigers (5-1, 3-0 CAA) 187-111 Saturday at Burdick Pool. It was the Towson's first loss in a dual meet since Nov. 13, 2010 when they were defeated by the Terrapins 203-97.

“Our performances were not where we needed to have them,” Towson Coach Pat Mead said. “If anything today, we were a little intimidated.”

Sophomore Kaitlin Burke had a solid day for Towson, winning the 100-yard freestyle event with a time of 52.76. She also finished in third place in the 50-yard freestyle and was a part of two top-three finishes for the Tigers in relay events.

“Kaitlin had a great 100-yard freestyle event,” Mead said. “She loves a race environment. When she is relaxed she can perform very well.”

Lafferty won the 100-yard butterfly with a 55.98 time and 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.88 for Maryland.

Lyndsey Dickson was impressive on the diving boards for the Tigers, finishing second in the three-meter dive with a score of 277.80, less than two points behind the winner of the event.

“She did a spectacular job,” Mead said. “Lyndsey did great today.”

The Tigers will next host the George Mason Patriots in a conference dual meet Saturday, Jan. 14 beginning in Burdick Pool at 1:00 p.m.
