Tigers Extend Streak with 58-54 Win Over Huskies

TOWSON, Md. – The Tigers used a four-point half time advantage to claim a 58-54 win over Northeastern on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association play. Towson's (15-9, 6-7 CAA) was its third straight and marked the fifth time in the last six years that the Tigers have won at least 15 games under Coach Joe Mathews.

“Getting our fifteenth win today gives us our fifth winning regular season in the last six years, so hats off to our team and our staff,” said Mathews. “It was a battle today. We talked about how confident we are in the final three minutes or in a one possession game. We made some big stops at the end of the game. Really proud of our team.”

Senior guard Krystin Fields hit a jumper at 16:05 to give the Tigers an early 9-2 lead in the game. The Huskies (4-20, 2-11 CAA) quickly responded with an 8-0 run to take a 10-9 advantage with 13:05 to go in the first half. Deanna Kerkhof scored five of the eight for Northeastern. The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes as freshman guard Destiny Shearin converted a three-point play at 10:40 to put the home team up 18-14. Northeastern quickly tied the game at 18-18 on a lay-up from Jamie Conroy. Senior guard Krystal Parnell sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a pair of free throws from the Huskies to give the home team a 24-20 advantage with 5:57 to play. Kerkhof's triple at 4:06 tied the game at 28-28. The Tigers would get the final two baskets of the half from senior guard Deree Fooks, including one at the buzzer to take a 32-28 lead into the break.

The Tigers shot 43.8% from the field in the first 20 minutes while Northeastern shot 37%. The Huskies were aided by making 7-of-11 attempts from the line. Towson held a 20-17 advantage on the boards and got nine first half points from Parnell.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle that featured seven ties and eight lead changes. Neither team held a lead of more than five points in the final 20 minutes of action. There were four ties in the first eight minutes of action. Shearin hit a jumper at 12:47 to tie the game at 39-39. That bucket jump started a 7-0 run by the Tigers that was capped by freshman guard Ciara Webb's bucket at 9:48. Towson held a 44-39 advantage at that point. Trailing 46-41, the Huskies would score seven of the next eight points to take a 48-47 lead with 6:43 to play. The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes as Geneviev Gaboriault hit a three-pointer with 1:56 to play putting the visitors up 54-52. That would prove to be the last lead the Huskies enjoyed in the game. Fields sunk both of her attempts from the charity stripe at 1:29 to tie the game at 54-54. The Tigers made four free throws in the final minute of play, including three from Fooks to secure the victory.
