TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore attacker Andi Raymond and senior attacker Sarah Appelt each scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Tigers (2-0) to their second straight win, an 11-3 victory over local rival UMBC (1-2) at Johnny Unitas® Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers, who had seven different players score a goal in the win, have outscored their opponents by a 27-8 margin in the first two games. In the season opener, Towson earned a 16-5 victory over Oregon last Tuesday.
The Tigers needed just 68 seconds to take a 2-0 lead over the Retrievers. After sophomore attacker Ashleigh Rohrback converted a pass from junior midfielder Ashley Waldron just 23 seconds into the game, Appelt upped the advantage to 2-0 when she scored her first goal of the season, an unassisted marker past junior Kendall Mason.
After Waldron scored to increase the Tigers' cushion to 3-1 with 16:12 left in the first half, the Retrievers stopped the run with an unassisted goal from junior midfielder Lindsay Cox. But, the Tigers added a pair of goals from Raymond and junior attacker Olivia Turner for a 5-1 advantage at the intermission.
Turner scored her second goal of the game with 17:35 left in the second half to give Towson a 6-1 edge before back-to-back goals from Cox and senior attacker Emily Coady narrowed the gap to 6-3 with 10:36 remaining.
However, the Tigers put the game out of reach by scoring five goals in the final 8:30 while holding UMBC to just five shots. Raymond and Appelt each scored a goal during the run.
While Raymond and Appelt each led the Tigers with a three-point effort in the victory, Rohrback and Turner each scored twice. Senior goalkeeper Mary Teeters made nine saves for the Tigers, including seven in the second half.
Cox led UMBC in a losing effort by scoring two goals. Mason made seven saves in 35 minutes of action while freshman goalkeeper Anna Barnett made one save in relief.
The Tigers outshot UMBC by a 23-17 margin and had a 15-12 advantage in ground balls.
Off to a 2-0 start for the fourth time in the last five years, the Tigers will travel to No. 13 Loyola on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. game against the Greyhounds. Meanwhile, the Retrievers will host Duquesne on Saturday afternoon.
