Tigers Fall To Bridgeport As Catanzaro Shines

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Although senior Kacy Catanzaro won the all-around competition with a career high 39.05 score, the Tigers (6-3) lost to the University of Bridgeport in Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium on Friday evening. Bridgeport set a school record with its 194.625 score while the Tigers earned a 192.475 score.

Catanzaro became the 15th gymnast in Towson history to earn a 39.00-plus all-around score when she finished first in the meet at Bridgeport. She also became the first Tiger gymnast to top the 39.00-all-around mark since Alise McDonald in 2009.

En route to winning the all-around competition, Catanzaro tied for first place on bars with a 9.825 score. That marked the third time in four meets that she finished first on bars. She also tied for sixth place on vault (9.725) and finished second on balance beam (9.75). On floor exercise, she tied for fourth place with a 9.75 score.

Competing as an all-around for the first time in her career, senior Avis Hixon finished third in the all-around competition with a 38.75 score. On balance beam, she tied for second place with a career high 9.75 score. She was fifth on vault (9.75), fifth on bars (9.60) and seventh on floor (9.65).

“We absolutely had some great performances tonight,” said Towson Coach Vicki Chliszczyk. “However, our goal each meet is to hit 24-for-24 on our routines. Because we are capable of that, we shouldn't be satisfied with anything less.”

She added, “We are making mistakes that we shouldn't be making.”

Senior Lindsay Poplaski also had a solid meet. She finished fourth in the all-around with a 38.475 score and she also took third place on vault with a career high 9.80 score.

Competing in its home opener, Bridgeport was led by Monica Mesalles, who won the vault (9.85) and floor (9.85). She also finished second in the all-around with a 38.975 score.

The Tigers were competing without junior Britney Russell, who sat out the meet with a back injury.

The Tigers return to action at Ursinus next Sunday afternoon.
