No. 3 Maryland Defeats @Towson_WLAX, 13-3

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 3 University of Maryland women's lacrosse team defeated Towson University 13-3 on Tuesday evening. The Tigers (6-3) were playing their final non-conference contest of the season.

The Terrapins (10-2) scored a pair of goals in the opening minute of play to take an early 2-0 lead in the game. Karri Ellen Johnson and Kristy Black scored to give Maryland the early advantage. Johnson would go on to score four more times in the first half to help the home team open up a 7-0 lead at the half. The Tigers had a chance when sophomore attacker Rhiannon Coogle got a shot off with eight seconds left in the half but Brittany Dipper was able to make the save.

The Terps held a 14-8 advantage in shots in the first half and won seven of the eight draws.

Maryland scored the first five goals of the second half to take a 12-0 lead in the game with 22:30 to play. Katie Schwarzmann had a “hat trick” for the Terps during that stretch while Kelly McPartland scored the other two goals.

The Tigers got on the board with 19:21 to play as Coogle scored her 12th goal of the season. Coogle's tally was assisted by red shirt sophomore attacker Ashleigh Rohrback. Junior midfielder Ashley Waldron scored the Tigers' second goal of the game with 15:11 remaining on a nice move to the goal.

Junior midfielder Sarah Hogan made it a 12-3 game when she scored on a free position attempt with 6:06 to play. Maryland would score a goal with 1:52 to play to make the final score, 13-3.

Towson out shot Maryland, 13-12 in the second half but the Terps finished the game with a 26-21 advantage in shots. Maryland won 14 of the 18 draw controls in the game.

Dipper made five saves in 37 plus minutes of action to earn the win in goal. Kasey Howard and Abbey Clipp combined for five saves in 22:30. Senior Mary Teeters made eight saves in the loss for the Tigers.

Towson will be back in action on Sunday, Apr. 1 when it begins Colonial Athletic Association play by hosting Delaware at 1 p.m.
