TOWSON, Md. – Senior Aubrey Kirven and junior Katy Buck have been named the captains of the 2012 Towson University
volleyball team it was announced by Coach Bruce Atkinson.
“Aubrey and
Katy are outstanding choices as this year's captains,” said Atkinson. “They
both have a strong work ethic and a deep desire to succeed both on and off the
court.”
Atkinson
added, “We expect big things from both of them this season and I know that
they have the same expectations for themselves. They will do an excellent
job leading our team to the next level.”
Kirven was
a second team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection as the Tigers' setter
last season. Kirven finished the season with 1,200 assists and recorded 30 or
more assists in 25 of the 31 matches she appeared in. She led the CAA in
assists per set (11.55) and finished 12th in the nation in that
category. Kirven had 11 “double-doubles” (assists and digs) on the season while
adding 90 kills and 23 blocks.
Buck is
coming off a spectacular sophomore season in which she earned CAA Player of the
Year honors. She earned all-tournament honors in three of the four early season
tournaments. Buck led the CAA in kills per set (4.05) and after posting
double-digit kills in 28 of the Tigers' 32 matches finished the season with 457
total kills. Buck's 457 kills ranked fifth in single-season history for the
Tigers. She followed up her player of the year award by earning East Region
Honorable Mention honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Kirven,
Buck and the Tigers open the 2012 season on Friday, August 24 when they face
UMBC and St. John's as part of the Battle of the Bay Tournament at Morgan State.
