TOWSON, Md. - No. 1 University of Maryland used a 5-0 run to break open a one-goal game en route to an 11-8 win over the Towson University women's lacrosse team on Tuesday night in Unitas Stadium. Senior attacker Olivia Turner scored a career-high four goals for the Tigers in the game.

"I'm really pleased with how we battled tonight," said Towson coach Sonia LaMonica. "I thought our defense did a really nice job of containing their high powered offense and we feel like we can build on the positives going forward."

The first half was a tightly contested one as neither team held a lead of more than two goals in the first 30 minutes of action. Turner got off to a quick start scoring two goals in the first six plus minutes of action. Her goals gave Towson (1-7) a 2-1 lead. The Terrapins scored the next three goals of the game to take a 4-2 lead with 12:16 to play in the half. Katie Schwarzmann scored two of the three goals for Maryland (12-0).

The Tigers continued to battle as senior midfielder Ashley Waldron scored at 11:01 and redshirt junior attacker Ashleigh Rohrback tallied a nice wrap around goal at 8:23 to tie the game at 4-4. Maryland answered with a pair of goals and took a 6-4 lead with 2:45 to go in the half. Turner completed her hat trick with a goal at 1:39, which sent Towson into the half trailing 6-5.

Maryland outshot the Tigers 15-10 in the first half while each team won six draw controls.

The Terps made adjustments at the half and opened the second stanza on a 5-0 run. Schwarzmann had three straight goals during that stretch which gave Maryland an 11-5 lead with 18:33 to play.

The Tigers continued to battle as graduate student attacker Jackie LaMonica scored on a free position attempt at 14:03. Junior midfielder Rhiannon Coogle tallied an unassisted goal at 7:50 to make it an 11-7 game. Coogle's goal which came through traffic in the center of the crease extended her point streak to eight games. Turner scored her fourth of the game with 1:29 to play, which made it an 11-8 game and proved to be the final margin.

Kasey Howard made a pair of saves to earn the win in goal for the Terps. Sophomore Kelsea Donnelly made eight saves including a couple on direct shots to keep the Tigers in the game.

Maryland finished the game with a 30-18 advantage in shots and won 14 of the game's 21 draw controls.

Schwarzmann led Maryland with five goals and two assists while Kelly McPartland had three goals.

In addition to Turner's four goals, the Tigers got a goal and two assists from LaMonica and Rohrback.

Towson returns to action when it begins Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play on Sunday, March 31 at Delaware. First draw in that contest is set for 1 p.m.
