HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Despite a career-high 13 saves from sophomore Kelsea Donnelly, the Towson University women's lacrosse team fell to Hofstra University, 6-5 on Friday night in Hempstead, N.Y.
The two teams battled early as Donnelly came up with a couple of big saves in the game's first 10 minutes. The Tigers (7-8, 5-1 CAA) got on the scoreboard first as sophomore attacker Paige Duncan found the back of the net at 19:25. Duncan's goal was assisted by redshirt junior attacker Ashleigh Rohrback. Hofstra tied the game at 15:34 on a goal from Julia Riemer.
Duncan tallied her second goal of the game at 13:49, this time off an assist from sophomore attacker Sarah Maloof. Brittain Altomare tied the game at 2-2 with her goal at 12:44. Duncan completed her hat trick with her third goal of the game at 9:14. Altomare tied the game at 3-3 with an unassisted goal at 7:13.
The Tigers went back on top, 4-3 as senior midfielder Ashley Waldron scored on a free position shot at 1:52. Towson took the 4-3 lead at the half.
Hofstra outshot the Tigers 17-9 in the first half and controlled five of the eight draw controls.
The start of the second half was a back and forth affair as both teams had chances but neither team was able to convert early.
Liz Anders tied the game at 4-4 with her unassisted goal at 15:36. Hofstra (9-6, 3-2 CAA) took its first lead of the game on Taylor Albright's goal at 12:11. Becky Conto gave the Pride a 6-4 lead with an unassisted goal with 10:17 to play in the game.
The Tigers broke up the Hofstra run with a goal by graduate attacker Jackie LaMonica. LaMonica's goal was assisted by Rohrback. Towson had a chance to score in the final minute but Hofstra goalie Kelsey Gregerson came up with a save to preserve the lead for the win.
Both teams took 10 shots in the second half as Hofstra finished the game with a 27-19 advantage. Towson won three of the five draw controls in the second half as the Pride finished with a 7-6 edge in the game.
Gregerson made six saves in goal, including five in the second half to earn the win. Eight of Donnelly's 13 saves came in the first half of the game.
Duncan led the Tigers with three goals in the game for her third hat trick of the season. Rohrback had two points on her pair of assists. Senior defender Alexa Demski recorded a pair of caused turnovers to lead the Tiger defense. Demski now has 90 caused turnovers for her career and moved into a tie with Julie Ondrako for second on the career caused turnover list.
Altomare led Hofstra with a pair of goals while Albright had a goal and an assist.
The Tigers return home on Sunday, April 21 to host Drexel at 1 p.m. That game will be the Tigers' “Pink Day” and fans are encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness. Towson will also honor their seven seniors prior to the start of that game.
