RICHMOND, Va. - Despite Kathleen Morris' second goal of the season, the Towson University field hockey team suffered a 3-1 setback on the road to the Virginia Commonwealth Rams (2-2) on Friday night at Cary Street Field.
The Tigers (1-4) started off strong and took a lead after the first half of play for the third time in five games this season. Morris scored her second goal of the season with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half, taking a pass from Kate Williams and converting past VCU's Kendall Clifton for a 1-0 Towson advantage.
Despite not tallying a goal in the first half, the Rams offensive attack had much better execution in the second half, applying unrelenting pressure and taking 12 shots in the second period of play.
Three of those shots found the net, as Emilie Soares, Alexis Schramm and Kayla Mueller all tallied goals to help the Rams earn the come-from-behind win. Schramm's goal 42:36 into the game gave VCU a 2-1 lead, one the team would not relinquish.
For the game, the Rams outshot Towson 16-6, as Clifton made four saves to earn her first victory of the season.
The Rams' Kendell Combs took a game-high seven shots, while Williams took three to lead Towson.
Towson goalkeeper Brittany Varacallo made three saves for Towson.
The Tigers remain on the road for the next game on Sunday, as they face Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m.
