MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Towson University junior Kelly Mattingly scored her first goal of the season on Saturday afternoon, but the Tigers (1-9) were edged by the Ohio Bobcats (3-5) in overtime by a final score of 2-1.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Mattingly took a shot that went past Ohio goalkeeper Brittany Walker with 14:19 remaining. Mattingly took two shots on Saturday and now leads the team with 16.
For the first 65 minutes of the game, the Tiger defense and goalkeeper Brittany Varacallo were outstanding. Despite facing a high volume of shots, Varacallo kept the Bobcats scoreless until a late charge eventually turned the game into the Bobcats' favor.
The rally started when Franziska Schmiedel converted a penalty corner into a goal past Varacallo. The game-tying goal was scored with 3:21 remaining in regulation.
The Bobcats then got the game-winning goal from Jessica Jue 7:39 into the overtime period for the eventual 2-1 outcome.
Varacallo faced 33 Bobcat shots and made 13 saves, a season-high. She lowered her goals-against average to 2.08 on the year.
The Tigers return home on Friday, Oct. 4, for the team's Colonial Athletic Association opener against James Madison at 6 p.m.
