TOWSON, Md. - After earning its third straight victory to begin the season, the Towson University women's tennis team faces Montana State on Friday evening at Bare Hills Racquet Club for a match that begins at 6 p.m.
The Tigers (3-0) are off to a hot start to the season, but their conditioning will be tested in the coming weeks. Montana State represents the third of five matches in the month of February. In March, Towson faces a 12 opponents. Fitness will be at a premium.
Towson has adapted well to the up-tempo schedule, defeating its last two opponents (George Mason and Lehigh) by a combined 9-5 margin.
Most recently, the Tigers defeated Lehigh on February 15. After losing the doubles point to begin the match, the Tigers tied the score at 3-3 with just one singles match remaining.
Tthe Tigers' Ariel Burke and Lehigh's Jill Sloand were locked at a set apiece. Trailing 5-1 in the tie-breaker, Burke pulled ahead of Sloand and picked up a 10-6 win for Towson's fourth and deciding point to win the match for the Tigers.
Burke improved to 2-1 overall this season. Both of her wins have come in dual matches.
The Tigers also have three additional players with winning records this season. Freshman Sophie Lesage has six wins to lead the team, while senior Nisha Shah and Lorena Ferrer have matching 4-2 records.
