Towson Golf Celebrates St. Paddy's Day in Ireland

KILLARNEY, Ireland - The Towson men's and women's golf teams had a full St. Patrick's Day - playing golf, walking in the parade and seeing the sights around Killarney.

Nine of the men's golfers plus Coaches Brian Yaniger and Jeff Castle returned to Killarney Golf and Country Club to play nine more holes in the morning before rejoining the rest of the team to march in the parade.

The Tigers braved a steady drizzle to march through the town holding Irish, American and Towson flags and waving to the thousands of people who lined the parade route. The team even met Baltimore-area residents and a Towson alumna who had come to Killarney for the holiday.

Towson was the first American golfers to march in Killarney's parade. The Tigers joined a troupe of Irish dances, youth Gaelic football and hurling teams, and several marching bands among many other local organizations.

After the parade and a stop at Murphy's ice cream, the Tigers roamed Killarney seeing the historical sites and buying souvenirs before dining at Bricin Boxty House. The teams chose from appetizers like fresh mussels, chicken and vegetable spring rolls, and seafood chowder before chowing down on mains like chicken filo, rib-eye steak and the house specialty - boxty, a type of potato pancake.

The Tigers made the national 6 p.m. news during RTE 1's review of parades around the nation.

Tomorrow, Towson returns to the greens instead of wearing it, playing Waterville Golf Club before taking a driving tour of the Ring of Kerry.
